Mexico Reopening – Latest Updates

June 5 – Mexico City to lift more COVID-19 restrictions in June as the pandemic figures improve

The pandemic figures in Mexico City have been decreasing over the last 4 weeks and deaths have fallen dramatically nationwide.

According to the city Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, convention centers, schools, and concert halls will reopen this month as the pandemic figures improve.

“More economic activities will open and jobs will recover,” said Sheinbaum at a press conference on Friday.

Additionally, the U.S. has agreed to send Mexico one million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine against COVID-19 that will be distributed among those under 40, said Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday.

Local media has started to speculate this may help with the U.S. border reopening.

After a series of optimistic tweets posted on the official Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs’ twitter account, in which they celebrated the reopening of the land borders on June 21 at 00:00, a spokesman for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated that such reopening has not been approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

He also mentioned that they are “working closely with Canada & Mexico to safely ease restrictions as conditions improve.”

Marina Gonzales, President & CEO at San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce questioned the disparity over who is allowed into the U.S. “Why are Mexicans a health issue, the ones that cross by land, (but) not by plane?”

According to a Texas government spokesman, he asked the Department of Homeland Security and “they have no answer. It is very perplexing.”

May 3 – Mexico-US land border might reopen soon

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated the Mexico-U.S. border should be completely reopened soon after more than a year of closure.

“The opening of the borders will occur soon, completely,” Lopez Obrador said at a conference.

“From a public health standpoint, having rapid tests conducted before allowing entry into the U.S. from international destinations would be ideal,” […] “This would be similar to what is being done at the airports.” Said Laredo Health Authority Dr. Victor Treviño.

The Foreign Relations Ministry stated that given the reduction on local transmissions and deaths, the reopening seems to be possible.
